In celebration of her birthday today, May 21, let me share my preface to a self-published book, rather journal, "NORA AUNOR <superstar><artist><icon>" that should be out by the end of this month, with essays and articles by Joel David, Myke Obenieta, Noel Vera, Nestor de Guzman and Jojo de Vera, and photos sfrom the facebook pages of Alvin Cruz Bernardino (The Artistry of Nora Aunor) and Mercy Masangcay (The Songs of Nora Aunor).

TIMELESS:  THE CONTINUING RELEVANCE OF NORA AUNOR
Hers is a compelling narrative, to which the greater mass of her public has subscribed to through all these years. any deviation from its substance if ever proposed, is tantamount to heresy.
A young girl, so indigent that she sold water in plastic container to weary travellers in a train station and collected metal scraps to augment provisions for her family, went to the big city to seek her luck by singing in contests; a few years later, Nora Aunor became a star - a Superstar as a matter of fact - the Philippines' biggest so far has seen.

A Cinderella-like figure, that easily invoked by a number of cultural observers, but unlike the fairy tale's heroine, Aunor did not marry a prince to afford her fame and fortune.
If I may, through sheer innate talent, hard work and perseverance, Aunor had bceome what she was then, and what she is now - because, the first and perhaps the only actor with Malayan features, itself a revolutionary thought, to make it big: the biggest box-office star ever; arguably, the greatest actor in history; and unquestionably, the legendary cultural icon of her time.
Superstar. Artist. Icon.

In a career that spans more than four decades, a career path that envelopes multiple media forms - radio, music recording, film, television, theater and stage concertizing - and a career trajectory that saw the evolution of an extremely popular matinee idol to a critically-lauded actor whose works, both as performer and producer, have been celebrated in five continents and a staunch advocate of causes dear to her heart, championing Filipino independent cinema and of late, fighting for the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers, Nora Aunor's has been central to the vitality and dynamism of popular culture in the country.

it is in this context that this publication strives to contribute to this endeavor - first, to provide a forum for conversation and second, to preserve the legacy of her art and craft.
